Nature Watch

It’s so easy to let our children stay inside and watch TV or play computer games, but there are so many benefits to spending time outside (for children and adults!)  Why not take them outside in the fresh air, just to play and let off steam or on a “look and listen” nature walk and talk about what you can see and hear – fun, exercise and informative!  We all have days when we know the children just need to get outside and the difference it makes is amazing.

If you want something other than a walk to the swings it’s really easy to make a treasure hunt and kids love them.  You don’t always have to collect things, it could be who can find, maybe the roughest bark on a tree, the brightest coloured flower, the loudest duck on the pond.  Or maybe collect a brown leaf, a feather, a soft petal, the longest piece of grass.  You could make it into a fact- finding mission at home too – what was the yellow flower or tree called?  Which bird lost their feather?  What sort of animal did the poo come from?  The Woodland Trust are an excellent source of information, and don’t forget the National Trust “50 things all children should do before they’re 11 ¾”  which we wrote about previously.

We have a great range of gifts for children with inquisitive minds The Bug Viewer or The Live Butterfly Garden Kit are fascinating and excellent for learning more about nature close up, or lend nesting birds a helping hand by foraging for nesting material with our Birds Nest Kit.  If you are more adventurous and go for a night-time walk (or exploring in the garden in the dark) we have the Night Mission Goggles, Explorer Head Torch.

Or if you want to help nature for many years to come why not plant your own tree? With lots of celebrations planned for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee this year, encourage your children to add to the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative by planting a seed from our Plant a Tree for the Jubilee Kit.

If you want to get out and about in the rain, we have that covered too, with our range of colour changing umbrellas, they will never mind going out in the rain.
