Is there a little person in your life who can spot a fire engine from half a mile away? Perhaps every flash of red prompts an excited cry of “fire engine!”, or you have a budding firefighter who spends their days racing to imaginary emergencies around the house.
There’s something about fire engines that captures young imaginations, and once the fascination begins, it can become a firm favourite for months or even years.
With Emergency Services Day taking place on 9 September, it felt like the perfect time to look at why so many toddlers and young children love fire engines, and some of the different ways you can bring that interest into their play.
Why do children love fire engines so much?
To a young child, a fire engine has just about everything going for it. It’s big, bright red, noisy and exciting. There are flashing lights, sirens, ladders, hoses and firefighters in special uniforms. Even among all the other traffic on the road, a fire engine stands out.
Then there’s the excitement of where it might be going.
A fire engine isn’t simply travelling from one place to another. When those blue lights are flashing, it has somewhere important to be. For a child beginning to create their own stories through play, that provides a wonderfully simple starting point. Where is the fire engine going? Who needs help? How will the firefighters save the day?
There’s lots to notice and recreate too, from extending the ladder to pretending to use a hose.
Real sirens, flashing lights and enormous vehicles can sometimes seem rather loud and overwhelming when you’re small. Through imaginative play, children get to take charge of the action themselves. They can decide when the fire engine races off, what happens next and, most importantly, that everyone gets home safely.
When they want to control the action
Sometimes all you need is a fire engine and a floor.

When they want to be the firefighter
Of course, some children aren’t content with sending a toy firefighter to the rescue. They want the job themselves.

When they want to puzzle it out
A love of emergency vehicles doesn’t have to mean racing around the house with a siren at full volume.

And if your house is currently home to a firefighter who never seems to be off duty, enjoy it. These wonderfully enthusiastic phases are all part of the fun of childhood.
